WESTEROS ON THE POTOMAC
Like the TV show, Americans have seen the limits of good kings. Jedediah Purdy writes that George R.R. Martin's works grapple with the basic problem of politics: Treachery and cunning are necessary, even in a democracy.
GLORY DAYS
As pro-Russian protesters barricade themselves in government buildings, the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine feels like it's traveled back in time to the 1980s. David Patrikarakos reports from the scene where Stalin, Lenin, and the hammer-and-sickle flag fly proudly. Protesters don't want independence from Ukraine; they want the Russian empire to return—just like Putin.
HALF-BAKED
In March, the nation's richest source of information about cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine abuse was terminated by budget cuts, Abby Haglage reports. The Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring survey was the only large-scale measuring system that relied on objective data about recent drug use. Good luck reforming or funding drug-abuse treatment without it.
GOOSEBUMPS

The Army has released an official timeline for the recent shooting at its Fort Hood base in Texas. According to officials, Specialist Ivan A. Lopez drove his own car to three separate buildings over a period of eight minutes beginning around 4 p.m., and shot at least 35 rounds at fellow troops. Those shots ended up killing three unarmed soldiers, and wounding 16 others who were either standing outside, driving a car, or sitting at desks. Lopez, 34, hit two buildings related to his daily life—his transportation unit's headquarters and an office where he worked. Upon being confronted by a police officer, he shot himself in the head and died.

LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control shows that despite significant progress reducing teen pregnancy, the sexual education of American students is still severely lacking. Rachel Bronstein reports.
