Cheat Sheet - Bergdahl Breaks His Silence

Read This, Skip That ....

July 16, 2014
DEFENSE

The defense attorney for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl says the former POW is "deeply grateful to President Obama for saving his life." Eugene Fidell, a Yale Law School professor, gave an exclusive interview to Josh Rogin. A notorious critic of the Guantanamo Bay detentions, Fidell is representing Bergdahl pro bono. "This case is one of a kind, really."

TRAGIC

Four children from one Palestinian family were killed by Israeli shelling of a Gaza beach Wednesday. The boys, ages 9 to 11, died from shrapnel wounds and burns. Dozens of journalists witnessed the attack, which occured in front of the Beach Hotel, which is popular with the foreign press. A Guardian correspondent said he and other journalists ran to the children's aid. "The second shell catches the survivors as they reach the brightly coloured tents," Peter Beaumont wrote. "As it explodes, my colleagues, now standing by the terrace wall, shout at unseen Israeli gunners who can't hear them: 'They are only children.'" Gaza's health ministry says more than 200 people have been killed in fighting, 37 of them children. It's about to get worse, too: An Israeli official said the chances of a ground invasion to stop Hamas from firing hundreds of rockets at Israel is "very high."

VROOM

On Tuesday night, Tesla Motors confirmed rumors that plans were underway for a third-generation electric car called the Model III to go on sale in 2017 that will be priced at $35,000 and compete with the BMW 3-series. That price tag will be half of Tesla's Model S, while matching its 200-mile range on battery power. "We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E—I thought this is crazy, Ford's trying to kill sex! So… the new model is going to be called Model 3," said CEO Elon Musk.

BAD SCIENCE

The science, technology, engineering, and math fields have long had trouble maintaining female researchers and professors. A new study showing frighteningly high rates of sexual harassment and assault of women in the field suggests why. Brandy Zadrozny reports that two-thirds of female scientists say they have suffered on-site harassment—and one in five have been the victims of sexual assault.

BORDER WARS

Khaled Jarrar's award-winning film documents Palestinians as they try to cross into Jerusalem from the West Bank. Ironically, Jarrar can't attend a New York art exhibition showing his movie because Israel won't let him leave. Justin Jones reports on the artist whose life is suddenly imitating his art.
