Cheat Sheet - Bill Maher: Wake Up, Liberals!

Today: Nelson Mandela Hospitalized, NATO Recalls Afghan Ministries, How Israel Could Remove Assad

DONATION

Is the professional cynic turning into an idealist? Maher says he's writing a very big check to support President Obama in hopes that other rich liberals will wake up to the looming threat from Republicans' super PACs in November. He talks to The Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove about the big donation.

RECOVERY

Former South African president Nelson Mandela is reportedly in stable condition Saturday after undergoing surgery for an abdominal complaint. Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj told South African private news channel eNews that the 93-year-old former statesman is "in good spirits and well." Maharaj would not confirm whether Mandela had surgery, but did say the former president was being treated for a "long-standing complaint" and not something "cropped up suddenly and needed emergency attention." Mandela, 93, who is not only a beloved former leader in South African but also an icon of the anti-apartheid movement, has been in declining health over the past few years.

ATTACK

NATO said on Saturday that it would remove all foreign ministries from Afghanistan after two U.S. military officers were reportedly attacked and killed Saturday inside the heavily guarded Interior Ministry in Kabul, and government offices were put on lockdown as a result. NATO Gen. John Allen said they were being pulled for "obvious security reasons." Protests against the Quran burnings by NATO forces continued for a fifth straight day. Four people were shot dead by Afghan security forces, while another 50 were wounded in the normally restive northern Kunduz province, where hundreds of protesters tried to overrun a compound housing the U.N. Assistance Mission. The protesters were held back by police, an Interior Minister said. At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds more wounded since the protests began Tuesday.

SYRIA

How could Netanyahu topple Assad and weaken Hizbullah in one fell swoop--a far more strategic opportunity than a strike on Iran? Hand over the Golan Heights, says Bruce Riedel.

ON THE TRAIL

As the days dwindle down before Tuesday's highly anticipated primaries in Michigan and Arizona, Rick Santorum devoted a speech Friday night to a thinly veiled attack against Romney. Santorum called himself a "conviction conservative" and knocked Romney for being "inconsistent," hammering him for opposing the auto industry rescue in Michigan while supporting the Wall Street bailout. Santorum billed it a policy speech, but he spent most of the night attacking Romney—although he did give some broad criticisms of President Obama as well. Meanwhile, the struggling Newt Gingrich tried to revive his campaign in Olympia, Wash., telling lawmakers and reporters that the state is taking the wrong action on gay marriage but "doing it the right way," by letting the voters decide.
