Brazil nightclub fire kills scores
At least 245 people have been killed in a fire at a nightclub in southern Brazil. Local media have reported that a band's pyrotechnics show caused the building to catch fire.

Mali conflict tops agenda at AU talks
The African Union (AU) summit has opened in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa with an agenda focusing on the conflict in Mali. Meanwhile, French troops have moved on from Gao and are headed to Islamist-held Timbuktu.

At least ten killed by IED in Afghanistan
At least 10 people have been killed in southern Afghanistan after the vehicle they were traveling in struck a bomb. Among those killed were three men suspected of planting a bomb that did not go off.

Too soon for sighs of relief
The mood at this year's World Economic Forum in Davos was good. Perhaps too good - because the dangers facing the world economy are still enormous.

No end to violent protests in Egypt
More than 40 people have died in clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Egypt's opposition is threatening to boycott the parliamentary polls if its demands are not met.
