Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is awake and answering questions, according to a law-enforcement official. According to reports Monday, the brothers Tsarnaev planned to escape to New York on Thursday—armed with explosives. Meanwhile, at a radical mosque in Dagestan, Tamerlan Tsarnaev is remembered by many worshipers—and the secret police. The Daily Beast's Anna Nemtsova reports. Plus, Michael Moynihan on how the Boston bombing is a "gift" to Putin.

FEARMONGERING

There's a common thread linking conservatives' positions on gun control, immigration, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: the constant need to stoke fear, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky.

DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE

Officers received an emergency call to an apartment complex in the southern Seattle suburb of Federal Way around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. By the time they arrived, a gunfight was already underway, and by early Monday morning, five people had been shot and killed, including a suspect who was likely hit by police fire. All eight officers who fired their weapons at the scene are now on customary administrative leave as the investigation proceeds. It's still unclear what sparked the shooting, but Federal Way spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said, "We're gonna continue to go door to door in hopes that we can find some additional witnesses, and hopefully we won't be finding any more victims."

NOT SO SMOOTH

A Chevrolet Tahoe blew past an immigration checkpoint in Vail, Arizona, on Sunday night, instigating a car chase with Border Patrol that ended a deadly crash killing at least five people and injuring 12 others. It's unclear how many people exactly were inside the van: Pima County's Rural/Metro Fire Chief said 22 passengers were on board, while U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the van carried 18. "Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the Tahoe lost control on the exit ramp and rolled the vehicle, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries," the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency said in a statement.

HOSTAGES

An Afghan pilot and nine foreign nationals were captured by the Taliban on Sunday, when the private helicopter they were using to deliver food and other items to Kabul from a NATO base in Khost province malfunctioned and was forced to make an emergency landing in eastern Afghanistan. They were immediately surrounded by Taliban insurgents, and the seven Turkish engineers, two Russian pilots and one Afghan were taken hostage. Via text message, the Taliban told news outlets it was responsible for forcing the aircraft to land. Tribal elders have been enlisted by local officials to help rescue the hostages.
