Read This, Skip That ....

July 18, 2014
Heartbreaking

Dr. Joep M. Lange helped invent the HIV test and urged sending drugs to poor AIDS patients when the world was resigned to let them die. This hero was killed on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine on Thursday. Kent Sepkowitz writes about the epic hero the world just lost.

TRAGEDY

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, President Obama addressed the shooting down of a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine. The president declared that "the deaths are an outrage of unspeakable proportions." "At least" one American citizen was aboard, Obama said: Quinn Lucas Schansman. The Netherlands lost 189 people, the most of any country. "Today I want the Dutch people to know we stand with you shoulder to shoulder," he said.

TOO LATE

In the hot seat over recent events in eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a ceasefire between Russia-backed separatists and the Ukrainian government. "Direct talks between the opposing sides must be established as soon as possible. All sides in the conflict must swiftly halt fighting and begin peace negotiations," Putin said on Friday during a meeting with leaders from the Russian Orthodox Church. "It is with great concern and sadness that we are watching what is happening in eastern Ukraine. It's awful, it's a tragedy." Germany's Angela Merkel also called for a ceasefire on Friday.

Killing Fields

In their defenselessness and desperation, Gaza's civilians find determination and a sense of community as they lay their dead to rest. Jesse Rosenfeld reports from Gaza City.

VOYEURS

In an interview with The Guardian on Thursday, Edward Snowden claimed that within the NSA, a culture existed that allowed staffers to pick up nude photographs of people in "sexually compromising" situations. These photographs, he says, were often passed around. In the same interview, Snowden opened up about life in Russia, said he could live with ending up in Guantánamo Bay, and hoped he would get a jury trial in the U.S. instead of a judge.
