END GAME
The terrorist brothers who attacked Charlie Hebdo survived a shootout with police and took a hostage. A gunman linked to them who killed a policewoman yesterday has taken five people hostage at a kosher supermarket in Paris.

The attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo bears the hallmarks of an al Qaeda affiliate, U.S. intelligence sources tell Shane Harris and Nancy A. Youssef.
BAD CROWD

According to a senior Yemeni intelligence source, the eldest of two brothers suspected of the attack on Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris met with U.S.-born al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al Awlaki during a trip to Yemen in 2011. U.S. and European sources who spoke with Reuters say that 34-year-old Said Kouachi met Awlaki during a months-long trip to train with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Awlaki, who was killed in a drone strike in 2011, was linked to the "Underwear Bomber" plot to blow up a flight over Detroit in 2009 and Nidal Hassan's killing of 13 at Fort Hood in 2009.

#JeSuisAhmed
The most chilling image from the Paris terror attack is of Police Officer Ahmed Merabet begging for his life—and his sacrifice has inspired an outpouring of tributes, Michael Daly writes.
SCHOOL IS IN SESSION

President Obama unveiled a plan Thursday to make two-year community colleges free for "anyone who is willing to work for it." Effectively, the move would mean students would earn half of a bachelor's degree for free if they met certain stipulations, including maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA and attending school at least half of the time. According to the proposal, federal funds would cover three-quarters the cost of the average community-college tuition, but states would be expected to cover the rest. Community colleges must also offer academic programs that are transferable to four-year colleges and universities or "occupational training programs with high graduation rates and lead to in-demand degrees and certificates."
