In a dramatic shootout Friday, commandos killed the terrorists behind the worst massacre in France since the end of World War II. Nico Hines writes Chérif and Saïd Kouachi were holed up with a hostage in a building close to Charles de Gaulle Airport. The al Qaeda-linked brothers returned fire with special forces before being killed. Twenty miles away, two members of the same terrorist cell took several people hostage in a kosher supermarket. The gunman was killed by police, though not before killing several hostages and his female accomplice escaped.

The Labor Department's December jobs report, released Friday, shows that 2014 was the best year for the U.S. labor market since 1999. The jobless rate declined to 5.6 percent, the lowest level since June 2008. The final month of the year added 252,000 jobs, on top of the 353,000 added the previous month—though earnings took an unexpected decline. In total, about 2.95 million Americans found work in 2014, the most in 15 years.

HOUSE OF GOD

A Dublin priest received a standing ovation after coming out as gay during Mass. Father Martin Dolan, a priest at the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra for 15 years, called on parishioners to support same-sex marriage in an upcoming referendum in May. "I'm gay myself," he added, prompting parishioners to stand up and clap for the priest. "We are all very proud of Father Martin," said youth worker Liz O'Connor. "Because he has admitted that he is gay he doesn't change the person that he was before it."
