Today's advice comes from Mike Figliuolo, founder of thoughtLEADERS. "Every once in a while you need to throw a hay-maker of a punch right in the face of your opponent -- the kind of punch they never, ever forget. The kind of punch people talk about as the stuff of legend." Mike Figliuolo is the author of "One Piece of Paper: The Simple Approach to Powerful, Personal Leadership," a guiding for defining your personal leadership philosophy. Although many business issues can be resolved amicably, he says there are other more crucial ones that demand you put your foot down right away. Giving your competitors, co-workers and customers the sense that you are willing to roll over often will lead them to continue to take advantage of you. The point is not to be a bully, but to send a message to whoever you're dealing with that you're not willing to be shortchanged. When you've made your point, "let your opponent know that you'd like to resume civil discourse," says Figliuolo. "It’s a tough world out there. If people believe you’re a pushover, they’re going to continue attacking you. When they sense weakness, they sense opportunity. Only you can prevent that dynamic from spiraling out of control."
