DEFENSE

The vice president made headlines Tuesday when he told a mostly black audience that Romney’s economic policies would “put y’all back in chains.” While some have called the comments offensive, for music mogul Russell Simmons, Biden was speaking the truth.

CAN I SEE SOME ID?

Amid a chorus of loud criticism, a tough, new voter-identification law will take effect in Pennsylvania before November’s presidential election, after a judge on Wednesday refused to grant an injunction that would halt it. The law, championed by Republicans, requires each voter in the state to show a valid photo ID—a mandate that opponents say will make it harder for the elderly, disabled, poor, and young to vote. Those critics are also quick to point out that those demographics happen to be likely supporters of President Obama. An appeal to the state Supreme Court is expected be filed in the coming days.

OUTSOURCING

ATROCITIES

U.N. human rights investigators have determined that Syrian government forces and the rebels have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity they said on Wednesday. But, investigators said, the Syrian rebels’ war crimes, “did not reach the gravity, frequency, and scale” of those being carried out by government forces. Meanwhile, Syrian government fighter jet struck the northern town of Azaz, killing seven Lebanese hostages and wounding four others, a rebel commander said. A local doctor said 80 people were killed and 150 others. In Damascus, the hotel where the United Nations monitors are staying was bombed on Wednesday.

ROYAL FAMILY

Prince Philip has been taken to the hospital, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday, as a “precautionary measure” while he was vacationing at Balmoral Estate. Buckingham Palace said the 91-year-old Duke of Edinburgh is at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary due to a reoccurance of a bladder infection. Philip was admitted to the hospital twice in the past year, for heart disease in December and for a bladder infection in June.
