Obama calls for rethink on gun controls
US President Barack Obama has announced a commission aimed at curbing gun violence in response to last week's massacre at a Connecticut school. The president said he would push for the recommendations to be put into law.

German President Gauck honors fallen Bundeswehr soldiers
In the third day of his visit to Afghanistan, German President Joachim Gauck has paid tribute to German soldiers who have been killed there. Further plans to visit a military camp had to be scrapped due to weather.
Greece
Greek public sector workers strike against austerity
Greek public sector workers have begun a strike to protest against new austerity measures and planned layoffs. The 24-hour strike has disrupted local transport, grounded flights and shut down schools and offices.
World War II
German Italian WW II history remembered
A memorial site in Berlin is being planned to commemorate the 600,000 Italians deported to Germany and put into forced labor during World War Two. The move follows recommendations from German and Italian historians.
Iraq
Iraqi president to be sent for treatment in Germany
Doctors have recommended that the Iraqi President should be transferred to a hospital in Germany. Jalal Talabani, who suffered from a stroke, is seen as a bridging influence between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite populations.

Former German Defense Minister Peter Struck, a long-time member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has died of a heart attack in a Berlin hospital. He was 69.

UBS admits to fraud in Libor scandal, accepts hefty fine
Swiss bank UBS will have to pay a fine of $1.5 billion for orchestrating manipulations of the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor). The rigged interest rate caused people to pay more for loans.
