A lot of folks in Silicon Valley think that Windows is irrelevant.
But as Ed Bott pointed out on his personal blog earlier today, last month the hated Windows Vista actually had more active Web users than Mac OS X and Linux COMBINED. Windows 7 is even more popular. So is Windows XP, which has been around for more than a decade now.
That's according to NetMarketShare, which measures Web browsing activity around the world. That doesn't map exactly to sales, but it's a good proxy for actual day to day usage.
But what about mobile platforms? Aren't the iPad and iPhone and Android making personal computers irrelevant?
Not if you measure Web browsing. Here again, the lowly Windows Vista accounts for more Web page browsing than iOS and Android combined.
Of course, people don't browse as much on phones as they do on PCs -- they're probably using apps a lot more. But that's not the point. The point is that despite the rise of smartphones and tablets, Windows is still relevant.
