ALGERIA

As the death toll continues to rise after the four-day hostage siege at an Algerian gas production facility, Algerian officials have acknowledged that some of the hostage takers were captured alive. Officials had initially said that all 32 hostage takers were killed, but at least five militants were nabbed while alive. Meanwhile, the number of dead hostages has gone up as authorities discover more bodies in the plant. The death toll currently stands at 57, but nearly 800 hostages are believed to have escaped.

DAY TO REMEMBER

The Daily Beast's Michael Daly talks to the New York City police officer who helped save King's life a decade before the civil-rights icon was assassinated.

INSURGENT

Three suicide bombers launched an attack outside the headquarters of the traffic police in Kabul on Monday. Two additional attackers, armed with automatic rifles, stormed the area and fought with security forces for nearly eight hours. The assault killed three police officers and all five attackers. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the second on a government building in less than a week. One government official said, "Honestly speaking, this type of attack, at the start of the year, indicates the coming months are going to be tough."

INDIA RAPE

The Supreme Court of India announced it would consider moving the gang-rape trail out of New Delhi, after the lawyer for one of the defendants submitted a plea. M.L. Sharma, the lawyer for defendant Mukesh Singh, said in his petition that anger over the rape and killing of the 23-year-old student "has gone into the root of each home in Delhi" and his client "cannot get justice in Delhi." The trial was set to begin Monday in a special "fast track" court designed to deliver a swift ruling. But the father of the victim said, "It is the duty of the court and the judges to ensure that the final order to punish all the accused is handed down quickly and all the men are hanged."
