I have never heard of this theory, but it seems to be very helpful. It gives the options to weigh the choices that we have when it comes to decision making. I also think that in order to succeed and reach your goal, you have to have a plan of how you are going to get there, and I think this is a great way to start.

I don't know who Krautt was but I like his corr0llaries. This is a great way to do some future planning; I'm all about increasing my options. I do think it's necessary though to keep in mind that some of the inputs are loose assumptions or maybe even wild guesses. Even so, this gives you the beginning of a plan and a clearer idea of the options available to you.

I think the option tree is a good idea so people will know which way they want to go in life and how to be successful. I have done a option tree before now I'm just waiting to see where I end up.

This is good information. I don't think I will map out my career like that. But I will look into the company to see how often do their employees advance or if theirs room for advancement.

I believe the decision tree would be beneficial to assist when making decisions about jobs or furthering your education. I am always making lists of the positive and negative of decisions I make so this would be another tool I could use.

Willford Montgomery said...

Ok, the idea sounds good but as for me actually using this process I would have to say "Hellz to the no" If people are naive enough to believe that they have an abundance of options they are seriously mistaken.

Vanna Harriman said...

Very good tips! It is really important to weigh out your options before making a quick decision without really thinking it out! I would definitely be using these tips.

If you are like me, you hope to not need a decision tree because one path that arises is a way better opportunity than the other.

Before reading this, I had never heard of a decision tree, although I’m sure it is a very helpful and useful tool in decision making. I agree with Peter Drucker’s statement, “The best way to predict the future is to create it!” I agree with this because everyone has choices and decisions over their futures. It’s up to you whether you want to be successful or not. And it all falls back on education. Having an education can lead you very far.

I think the decision tree could be very helpful when looking at job options, especially for indecisive people. It can be stressful when looking at two different career possibilities and this could relieve some of the stress.

I remember learning how to make decision trees when I was younger. It never occurred to me to use them when making big decisions like a job or what to do after graduation.

This article is very true. Its really breaks down things that can help you understand things. Take control of your potential and do something about it.

I have never heard of a decision tree until now. The diagram is very similar to what was taught in Operations Management. It seems like a great way to keep focus on what is important. I like to plan everything. I have a daily schedule and a life schedule. This is something new for me so I think I might give it a try!

Great article on the steps to decision making. Every decision you make can impact the outcome and even change your life. Sometimes you got to make decisions fast and I believe a lot of businesses are faced with this same problem. Just take it step by step and you can make the right choice.

This seems like many tideous steps to finding a decision. I think it had some useful insight but may not be what I personally am going to use.

I plan for the future thats why I;m in college so I can have a better way of life and provide for my family better then I do now. I look head and set goals to achieve and as I reach those goals I set new ones. I teach my kids this.

I've actually never heard of a decision tree before and after reading this article and looking at the diagrams, I can see how it would be a good approach for some people to use in job searches and what not, but despite being a planner myself it seems too complicated for me to want to use.

I think it is important to draw out an option tree for your career options. I am about to go out job hunting and I need to consider all the options I could do with my business degree. I need to consider factors such as the cost of living and things when I’m looking for a job.

I can understand how making a decision tree can be helpful to some people in making tough decisions, but to me it's just wasting a lot of time. Usually if I have to make a big decision I know at least the main things I want or prefer, so there's no need in listing all the possible options, at least for me personally.

Monica Crane said...

I'm glad I read this article. Since graduation is getting so close and I'll begin to look for fulltime "real" jobs, this article has helped change my mind on how to weigh my options. I've always known that I didn't want to just apply for any job and reading this article confirmed my thinking. Because I'm a management major, I know that gaining new employees cost more than keeping old ones, so I have made up my mind to search for a job that I could see myself at for many years.

Debra Tucker said...

The decision tree is really not how I would make choices because everybody has their own way of dealing with possibilities. In a business one way may work for most management while others seek different strategies.

Justin Daniel said...

I liked how it takes decision making and breaks it all the way down for you. The article says the key to good decision making starts with good decision planning. The way that they tell you and show you how it’s broken down could one day lead you to potential outcomes that are extremely good. I feel that they key to any success is having goal that you and a team need to achieve.

Taylor Willie said...

This article is informative and really motivates the reader to "figure out" what the future has in store. The more technical aspects of the article were hard to follow, but overall it shows that experience is what makes future opportunities easier to figure out. These are all things that I consider being a college graduate. Great article!

Donald Bastoe said...

This is great advice. Too many people fail to plan and end up regretting the outcome. I have a problem with planning too far ahead, even with simple things like studying early for an exam, and I always kick myself later. This article was a bit of a wakeup call; I just need to hear it 100 more times before it sinks in.

MeganAStevens7 said...

Great tool, but I don't think I will be using it right out of college. I will be happy to get a job much less have my bevy of choices.

kevin patton said...

i dont i will really do the whole tree analysis with my job. i will look into it and at least do back ground on my company and see how the base pay is and long term for me to grow in a company. its always best to consider family and how well you want ot live your life. alos pros and cons are really good to consider alos.

Dana said...

This article is very helpful, although i don't think i'd really use it. It's an awful lot of stuff to do for planning a career.

Katherine Couret said...

Options, options, options! People can be very overwhelmed with options and some people enjoy having many options. It is difficult to go around with just having "one way or the highway" type of attitude because if you become single-minded a good opportunity may pass you by. You need to be able to have options and properly weigh them to evaluate which one works best.

c0mpl3xity said...

The most important thing to remember is "always have a plan and an exit strategy". Those without this will never succeed.

Amber Diane said...

This is very good advice and something everyone should think about before just jumping in to a situation. You should always think about what could possibly happen in the future and if you could possibly expand with the company.

Melanie said...

I agree. Everyone should at least try to find out what their potential is, and pursue it even if they fail.

Blaine Bennett said...

I like how it breaks down decision making and presents possible outcomes. I am a very strategized person and I try to map out everything and break down the possible outcomes. I think this can help you weigh your options and make the best decisions possible.

Lin said...

I can say that I have never heard of this decision tree to map out my options. The simple choices I have to make are whether to continue working, finding another job, developing my own business or possible to retire. I think my future is pretty direct at the present time. But I do believe that the best way to predict the future is to create it.

Tabitha K James said...

While decision trees are very good tools when used appropriately, I do not think that students fresh out of college often have enough information or access to the information needed to properly format a decision tree out with the actions and potential consequences.

Natalie said...

This concept is very refreshing! It is always good to plan or map out goals in order to see what you need to accomplish in order to reach your goals."Prepare for your tomorrows today, and they will look a lot like you expected them to." This quote sums up the benefit of planning.

bridgetb said...

I think decision trees should be used for major life changing decisions. These big decisions could be where to attend college, should I go to Grad school, or should i find another job. In my opinion if people did this more often, they could be happier in their lives. Planning is a major part of making a decision and you should always plan for change.

Lauren Guy said...

Interesting article on breaking down how to think of the decision making. I really like where it said, If you want to predict the future create it!

Megan VanderMeulen said...

It makes sense to be able to make better choice now about the future if you know something or the possibilities of future, potential outcomes. While this makes sense, HOW to actually go about calculating this is still very confusing to me

Haley St. Romain said...

I do a lot of decision planning in my life lately but I never went into this much detail. I think this will be very benefital to me not only with my career choice and grad school choice but also with personal choices. Before anyone makes a decision they should weight every possible outcome and alternative.

Taylor Willie said...

This article was very informative, but hard to follow at times. It got a little wordy explaining how to simply prepare for one's career. I'm not sure if I saw the valid point in diagraming an actual "career tree", but it must be working for someone! I find it easier to keep daily task and goals written down, which in turn come to bigger goals. This is where your potential begins in my opinion. Carrying out goals.

Emily Hanegan said...

I think this process might be a little bit too technical, but I do think its good to way your options. I am graduating in May and I am starting to look for jobs. There are so many options out there. Finding the right job is going to be very tough, but hopefully my patience will pay off.

Planning ahead never hurt anyone. It is nice to keep your options open and have a contingency plan. Even though I am a firm believer in having options, I cannot say I have many of them. I should take this into consideration. I am getting up there with my age not to have more options. (Think ten years ahead and not ten minutes ahead.)

Jessica Nicosia said...

I think it is very important to know what your opinions are before going into the workplace. For my situation, I am a single mom so I know that I do not really have the option for working somewhere that wants me to travel a lot. You need to know your options so you can make best decision for yourself.

victoriab said...

I think this is a great idea. I tend to be one of those people who write things down to make decisions anyway. I think that it makes it easier to decide. You can look at all your options, compare them, and then make a clear, thought out, well planned decision.

JenMGindro said...

I like how they take and break down lifes decisions and lay it out in steps. The decision tree i have actually never seen before, its a little elaborate for my decision making preference but the idea is nice. As a business major it is important for me to lay out theses plans/decions and weigh them out. This article provided some insite to managing my planning and organizing strategies that i plan to follow through with.

Erin Janway said...

This is an interesting idea. I believe it could work in so aspects however I think that your future depends on the choices that are being made right now. Determining your future my a decision tree could be done in theory but life throws to may wrinkles and crimps in order to predict the future on paper.

Cassie Habenicht said...

Planning for your future is very important and an essential key to success . My family will tell you I usually over plan things. I like to be prepared for anything that might happen. However I want to live my life (as it comes)and not live a plan I created years ago. People's wants and needs change over the years. I think the best thing to do is find a happy medium. Plan for the future but also include reevaluation points in the plan.

Jordan Hymel said...

The article does a great job at describing the decision making process. It really does a great job at breaking it down into steps. The decision tree helps you to use a decision making process and help you to see the good and bad of a certain decision. Life is all about making decisions and I really think that this decision tree will help you get to the end result of making the right choice.

seth leonard said...

Looking at your future options is extremely important, because if you don't you can find yourself being complaisant and never reaching your career potential. The tree decision process is really creative, and I can really appreciate the thought process that went into it. It can be difficult though, to come up with those specific figures. I just wonder if he made a tree diagram whether or not to come up with a tree diagram.

Jonathan Byrd said...

Looking at and evaluating your career options is vital to your professional success in the future. If you don't have a plan of how you want to achieve your career goals then you are setting yourself up for failure. Using the tree diagram can help you in the future in planning your career path while still giving you some back up plans . The tree diagram will help you with your decision process and help point you in the right direction when its time to choose a career path.
