Be Careful What You Wish for: Congressional Scrutiny of For-Profit Universities May Bring Focus on ROI of All of Higher Education

The old saying is that you must be careful what you wish for. That is certainly holding true today, as the "Empire" (traditional higher ed) has prodded Congress to take a careful look at the activities of for-profit colleges and universities (who, by the way, are growing by leaps and bounds at a time while the "old guard" are struggling against economics, budgets, and demographics). Now, the microscope is being turned back on the traditional world of higher education - as all struggle to find new ways of measuring value and how good - or how poor - all colleges and universities are performing.

Read the article from the Chronicle of Higher Education here below:

One thing is for certain, whoever can come up with an answer to finding the "third way" - new metrics for new times - to determine the value of college and university education will be a consultant in unbelievable demand - while doing a great service for students, parents, institutions, and yes, taxpayers. Start drawing out those equations and running data today! Of course, anyone who wants to call me to do this, hey, I am a doctor with tuitions to pay....

An Idea Whose Time Has Come: Reverse Auctions for Selecting Pension/Investment Advisors

This is an interesting development our of California (where all trends do start). San Diego County is - like many, many local and state governments - experiencing massive problems with its pension system. Now, the unique Grand Jury of San Diego County (http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/grandjury/index.html) has put forward a series of recommendations to help "fix" their broken retirement system.

The San Diego City Employees' Retirement System has incurred a whopping $7 billion deficit! Now, the San Diego County Grand Jury has proposed a number of options to deal with this massive problem, including dissolving the entire pension system. One of its principal options, according to Pensions & Investments, is to have the retirement system select investment advisers through a reverse auction process to ensure that the pension fund is receiving the most cost-competitive, quality advisory services.  Read the complete article here:

This is most assuredly an area that is ripe for employing competitive bidding. Reverse auctions would certainly seem to be a great answer for providing transparency and true competition, replacing a legacy of deals too often made nationwide in fancy restaurants, on golf courses, and in back rooms. Here at the Reverse Auction Research Center (http://reverseauctionresearch.blogspot.com/), we'll keep tabs on what may indeed be a new trend coming from California.

Personal Insights

Why I think:

· The author is one of the most brilliant people around…or is full of $%&#, because:

The author is one of the most brilliant people around because he proved that if you put your mind to something that you can do it. William just started out going to the library to read books to try and caught up on his education since he was not able to go to school for a while. By going to the library, he was able to check out books that he was interested in as in electricity and physics. So by reading those books, he had the idea to build a windmill.

· With business conditions today, what the author wrote is – or is no longer true – because:

With business conditions today, what the author wrote is true to a certain extent because in some parts of the world you still have people that does not have money to eat. In America, it is better off than some of the others countries. He showed that nobody what country or education or live style that you are in you can accomplished and achieved your goal if you put your mind to it.

· If I were the author of the book, I would have done these three things differently:

1. I would have started talking about how he built the windmill earlier in the book then towards the end of the book.

2. I would have given more detail on how he built the windmill. He should have said I did this to get this to work and etc.

3. I would have not given all the stories that he did in the beginning of the book from his father and grandfather. Although some of it was good, I would not have given that more information.

· Reading this book made me think differently about the topic in these ways:

1. It made me think differently about the topic because it shows that you did not need an education or expensive things to build something if you put your mind to it.

2. It made me think differently about the topic because it shows how America is different from other countries. It showed in this book the different culture and the education then in the United States.

3. It made me think differently about this topic because I would have not thought of building an electric windmill out of things that were around the house or village.

· I’ll apply what I’ve learned in this book in my career by:

1. I’ll apply what I’ve learned in this book in my career by when I start a project that I should finished it because I know at the end I will be proud that I accomplished what I started.

2. I’ll apply what I’ve learned in this book in my career by if you set your mind to do something that you can do it.

3. I’ll apply what I’ve learned in this book in my career by applying the determination and the courage to finish a project.

· Here is a sampling of what others have said about the book and its author:

“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” is the inspiring story of a young man in Africa who used the only resources available to him to build a windmill and elevate the lives and spirits of those in his community. William Kamkwamba’s achievements with wind energy should serve as a model of what one person, with an inspired idea, can do to tackle the crisis we face. His book tells a moving and exciting story.”
— Al Gore, former Vice President and Nobel Laureate

As you read this book (I’d suggest keeping a box of tissues handy) you can be sure that William Kamkwamba’s future is bright. If this tale is any indication, we’ll be hearing his name again in the years ahead.

Kate Vander Wiede is an intern at the Improper Bostonian magazine.

By the reviews above, it shows that people talk good about this book and how they encourage people to read this book. They talked about how William and determination and a bright future ahead of him for this young boy to build what he did.

Top Ten Management on The Free Market Economy: An Overview of The Underpinnings of Our Economic System…and What It Means to You

An out-ward or right-ward shift in supply redu...Image via Wikipedia

This overview of the Free Market Economy was prepared by Joshua Smith, while an Industrial Technology major in the College of Business at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Introduction

This article is an explanation of what a free market economy is and the advantages and disadvantages of a free market economy. Everyday people are hammering down companies to get their demands met of different products. Companies want to meet these demands and get products out to gain the advantage of customers. In this article, I will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of trying to meet those demands of customers through a free market economy.

The Idea in a Nutshell

A free market economy is a type of economy where all the goods and services are controlled by a private sector without any government intervention. The only intervention the government has is to enforce ownership and contracts. The resources of the economy are usually determined by the supply and demand for those resources. Companies try to meet these demands the best way possible to gain control of the customer’s appreciation and beat out the competition. There are many consequences that come with the free market economy and it can hurt you or help you in the long run with your business.

The Top Ten Things You Need to Know About a Free Market Economy

1. A company can set their own prices to win over customers and beat out the competition. The government has no control over how these companies set their prices which can work for or against the customer.

2. The demand of products will be met more quickly to please customers. Sometimes these demands can be met with the best quality available, but at times the worst product can be put out that can be harmful to the customers because of no government regulation.

3. A wide variety of goods and services can be produced to meet the needs of customers. The greater the need of a product, the more a company will focus on that need, but the least demanding products wont be focused on as much.

4. Different companies can provide the same goods and services to bring competition to the economy, but a company can gain control of a product or service and putting the competition out of business and later becoming a monopoly of the product.

5. Customers have a say in how they want the products and services to be and companies listen to those suggestions to meet those demands. If a company can’t meet those demands, they will lose out on the business of those customers to other competition.

6. New companies can jump in at any time and sell a product a company may have been selling for years. Low barriers to enter a free market economy make this possible without government control.

7. If a demand for a product is extremely high, a company can easily switch to that demand to meet the needs of that product or service. Companies do not have to undergo government protocols in order to service the product to the customer.

8. Innovation is one important aspect of a company to keep business booming. This helps increase efficiency of products to help meet the demands of customers.

9. Resources can become a huge waste of money when it comes to a free market economy. You can waste money from over advertising to losing out on products that are not demanded highly by your customers.

10. A free market economy can either make your business or break your business. Good management and meeting demands will make your business, but poor management and greed can break your business.

My Take

A free market economy is a good way to go if you have what it takes to be a competitor. Yes, there will be sacrifices you have to make but to win over a customer’s approval is a win in itself. If you provide great management and are able to provide what the customer wants, in its best quality and at a great price, you will have what it takes to survive in a free market economy.
