CheatSheet - Inside Herman Cain's Shaky Marriage

Today: Muslim Brotherhood: No Islamist Majority, Merkel Calls for Fiscal Treaty, News Reports Spur Legislators to Discuss Ending Insider Trading in Congress

UNSTABLE

In October, Herman Cain was on the ride of his life—"laughing his you-know-what off" as one Atlanta preacher described it—but the new charges of infidelity have done possible fatal damage to his campaign. As the onetime GOP frontrunner meets with his wife to discuss his political future, friends say fresh charges of infidelity have reopened old wounds in his marriage. By Allison Samuels.

EGYPT

So much for an Islamist majority. A day after Egyptian election results gave Islamists a 65 percent majority in parliament—the Muslim Brotherhood held 40 percent and the ultraconservative Salafis took a surprising 25 percent—the Brotherhood denied there was any alliance. The move is thought to be symbolic to assure liberals in the nation and Western governments that there should be no anxiety about the new regime. The Brotherhood has another fight on its hands: it's expected to try to name a new prime minister—though the current military government isn't keen on this at all.

CRISIS

In an attempt to save the euro, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday called for a new European Union treaty that would create a "fiscal union" that would give the EU greater power to intervene in countries' budgets. "We have started a new phase in European integration," said Merkel, while acknowledging that the project could take years. French President Nicolas Sarkozy also called for a new treaty, but he appeared to rule out Merkel's approach when he said "The reform of Europe is not a march toward supra-nationality." In the short term, the crisis continues, with Merkel reiterating her opposition to the European Central Bank issuing bonds.

INVESTIGATION

After several news outlets—including Newsweek and the Daily Beast—investigated insider trading by members of Congress, lawmakers are now discussing ways to make it illegal. The Daily Beast's Daniel Stone reports on Congress's hearings.

PRESSURE

In defiance of the Obama administration, the Senate unanimously passed economic sanctions against Iran on Thursday night—while several other Western nations followed suit. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other officials had warned that sanctions could raise oil prices without discouraging Iran's nuclear program. The amendment, which still needs House approval, would prevent organizations that do business with Iran's central bank from holding accounts in the U.S. The European Union, meanwhile, banned an additional 180 individuals and companies from travel to member states. Britain and France called for an embargo on Iranian purchases. The sanctions are in response to the ransacking of the British Embassy by an Iranian mob, apparently aligned with a government-controlled militia.
