The Daily Beast’s McKay Coppins and Nina Strochlic caught up with some of his patients to ask about the doctor's bedside manner. IOWA COUNTDOWN Mitt is focused like a laser on the economy down the homestretch, while the Texas governor is all over the map. The Daily Beast’s Andrew Romano on what two dueling performances show about the state of the GOP. FIRST STEP Chief negotiators for Israel and the Palestinians met Tuesday in Amman, Jordan, in the presence of international diplomats, marking the first face-to-face talk between the two sides in more than a year. “It was a brainstorming session in which both sides, the Israelis and Palestinians, showed eagerness to restart peace negotiations,” said one diplomat who sat in on the meetings. Earlier in the day, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas threatened to take “new measures” against Israel at the end of the month if an agreement was not reached to stop Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank. FACT CHECK NBC made news way back in June by challenging Mitt Romney on his claim that President Obama has made the economy worse. Now Romney is taking up his dubious claims once again, saying in Iowa that Obama “lost 2 million jobs”—false—and that Romney created 100,000 jobs at Bain Capital, for which there is no evidence. Fact checkers at PolitiFact and The Washington Post concluded that Romney’s “100,000 jobs” boast is at best unsubtantiated, and it’s possible that his layoffs outnumbered his jobs created during his time at Bain. HARSH WORDS Looks like Newt Gingrich isn’t the only GOP candidate “going negative” ahead of tonight’s Iowa caucus. Rick Santorum called opponent Ron Paul “disgusting” this morning, referring to automated calls claiming Santorum is anti–Second Amendment and pro-choice. The Pennsylvania senator blamed Paul’s camp for the calls. As the campaign heats up—Santorum, Paul, and Mitt Romney are currently locked in a three-way tie—some of the candidates are focusing their efforts on slamming one another. Gingrich also took a shot at the controversial libertarian last week, telling CNN, “I think it’s very difficult to see how you would engage in dealing with Ron Paul as a nominee.” The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz looks at the candidates' nasty new low blows. | |
