Syrians voted on Sunday in a constitutional referendum aimed at quelling the country's 11-month uprising. The opposition declared a boycott as clashes killed more people in the besieged city of Homs and elsewhere.

Barroso urges Germany to approve more aid for Greece as G20 meets
Ahead of a vote in the Bundestag on Monday, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has called on Germany to approve the Greek rescue package. Meanwhile, Germany is inching toward compromise at the G20 summit.

Police search for suspect in Afghan shooting
Afghan police are searching for "the main suspect" in the shooting deaths of two US military advisers. Meanwhile, Germany has become the latest country to withdraw its advisers from Afghan ministries and agencies.

Thousands surround central Moscow in anti-Putin protest
Thousands of Russians opposed to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's planned return to the presidency have formed a human chain around Moscow, one week ahead of the presidential election which Putin easily expects to win.

Colombia's FARC rebels to free hostages, give up kidnapping
Colombian rebel group the FARC has announced it is freeing the last remaining government and military captives. It has also sworn off the practice of kidnapping for good.

Senegal votes in controversial election
Voters in Senegal are casting their ballots in a presidential election after a campaign that was marred by violence. Incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade sparked controversy by running for a third term.
Justice
Egyptian judge adjourns trial against activists
A trial in Egypt against dozens of democracy activists accused of receiving illegal funds - among them 27 foreigners - has been adjourned. The hearing was scheduled despite US efforts to have charges dropped.
Strikes
Frankfurt airport braces for fresh walkout
Frankfurt international airport is gearing up to cope with the latest set of warning strikes by ground control workers. Mainly inner-German and European flights are expected to be affected.
