The Susan G. Komen foundation, the powerful charity in the throes of controversy over its temporary defunding of Planned Parenthood, has canceled one of its most important events of the year: its annual “Lobby Day” in Washington, D.C. The move indicates that Komen’s problems could impact an array of women’s health initiatives that reach well beyond the ones the charity sponsors itself. The Daily Beast’s Abigail Pesta reports.

Whatever It Takes

Newt Gingrich will make it to the Republican convention, even if he has to charge supporters $50 for a photo and cut some of his staff's pay to get there. "Look, clearly we're gonna have to go on a fairly tight budget to get from here to Tampa, but I think we can do it, and I think we will do it," the candidate told reporters in Maryland on Tuesday. Newt spent $200,000 more than he raised last month and has just as much debt as he does money in the bank.

CONFLICT?

As the high court weighs Obamacare, several members apparently hold investments in health-care companies. The Daily Beast’s Peter Schweizer on why it’s time to change the rules—and force those jurists to recuse themselves. Plus, chat live about health-care reform at 1 p.m. EDT with MIT economist Jonathan Gruber

SUMMIT

The times won’t be changing in Cuba any time soon, one official there said Tuesday. The vows of no reform in the near future came as Pope Benedict XVI met with Cuban President Raúl Castro as part of a multiday papal visit that some hoped might bring political change on the island. The pontiff and communist leader met privately for an hour but did not share details of their conversation with reporters. It’s still unclear whether or not the pope will meet with Fidel Castro, but the aging Cuban revolutionary was reportedly not present Tuesday.

TRAGEDY

The Tibetan protester who set himself on fire in India Monday died Wednesday from his burns. Photos of the 27-year-old man licked by sheets of flame showed him running through the street outside India’s Parliament building, where hundreds of protesters were gathered to demonstrate against China’s continued rule of their home country of Tibet. While Chinese officials say conditions in Tibet have been improved by their policies, the lengths demonstrators are willing to go to say otherwise—more than 30 Tibetans immolated themselves in China last year as a form of protest.
