Burmese democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has won a seat in parliament following landmark by-elections, according to the opposition. The victory marks Suu Kyi's first election to public office after decades of repression.

Tuareg rebels have entered Timbuktu, say witnesses in Mali's fabled city. Earlier, Mali's military had abandoned bases around another northern city, Gao, 200 kilometers away.

Six die in Serbia nightclub fire
A fire in a nightclub in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad has killed six people, all under the age of 30. The city was the site of two other deadly fires in the past five years.

Hanover top Gladbach, Schalke draw at Hoffenheim
Hanover 96 vaulted into fifth place in the Bundesliga after winning 2-1 at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Schalke came back to draw at Hoffenheim 1-1.
