A top security official is reported to be among the eight people killed after a car bomb blast in Beirut. Scores were injured in the attack, which comes amid tensions over the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has arrived in Damascus as the fighting shows no sign of abating. Meanwhile, Syrian warplanes have bombed the town of Maaret al-Numan as the regime tries to regain a key supply road.

Ten Somalis have been convicted Friday in Germany's first piracy case for centuries.

German Salafist slapped with six years for attacking police
An Islamist radical convicted of stabbing two German police officers during a protest against right-wing extremists has been sentenced to six years in prison. The 26-year-old refused to recognize the court in Bonn.

Explosives cut Iran-Turkey gas pipeline
A Turkish pipeline carrying natural gas was struck Friday, causing a large explosion and the wounding of several soldiers. Turkish authorities are calling the incident a terrorist attack.

International talks to reclaim northern Mali
African and European leaders meet in Mali's capital Friday to draft a military plan to reclaim the nation's desert north from armed Islamists. In Timbuktu, extremists leveled more tombs of local Sufi saints on Thursday.

EU brokers first direct talks between Serbia and Kosovo
The EU has overseen talks between Serbia and Kosovo. After the province declared its independence in 2008, Serbia had announced that it would never recognize Kosovo's independence.
