Clashes break out following Lebanese official's funeral
Heavy gunfire has been heard in Beirut after protesters attempted to storm a government building. This followed the funeral of a senior Lebanese intelligence official who was killed in a recent bomb attack.
Syria
Brahimi: 'Cease-fire not a blueprint for peace'
UN Arab League envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday. He used the occassion to reiterate his desire for both sides in the country's conflict to declare a 'unilateral ceasefire'.
Terrorism
Russian forces take few prisoners in security sweep
Russian forces have killed 49 people in raids across the North Caucasus, according to a news report. Clashes between police and extremists are common in the region, which includes the war-torn republic of Chechnya.
Iran
US and Iran deny report of nuclear talks
The US and Iran have denied a report that they have agreed to one-on-one talks about Tehran's nuclear program. The news comes at a pivotal time for President Barack Obama, just before the presidential election.
Spain
Elections in Spain measure regional discontent
Voters are casting their ballots in Spain's Basque and Galicia regions. With nationalist parties on the rise and discontent over the country's recession, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's Popular Party faces a tight race.

Fatah declares victory in West Bank local elections
President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement has claimed victory in local elections in the West Bank. Unofficial results show that Fatah candidates won in six of the 11 main electorates.
Armed Conflict
Germany rules out sending combat troops to Mali
Germany is willing to support a possible international military mission in Mali. However, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has ruled out sending combat troops.
Religion
'Lily of the Mohawks' and six other saints named
Pope Benedict XVI has named seven new saints, including the first Native American. He praised their "heroic courage" in a year when the Catholic Church is seeking to counter mounting secularism in the West.
