All the news that's fit for Mitt -- Sen. Disappointment -- Union politics -- George Will owns Andrew Sullivan -- "The Lizard King" quote of the day -- Poll of the Day: Virginia tied | 1.) All the news that's fit for Mitt -- A bunch of newspapers that endorsed President Obama in 2008 have balked at doing so again in 2012, reports TheDC's Neil Munro:
"Republicans are touting a list of newspapers that have switched their endorsements from then-Sen. Barack Obama in 2008 to Gov Mitt Romney in 2012. Their list is topped by the Des Moines Register, the largest newspaper in swing-state Iowa. But it also includes five Florida papers — Florida Today, the Orlando Sentinel, the Pensacola News Journal, Naples Daily News and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel — plus the Quad City Times, on the border between Iowa and Illinois. Other newspapers in Republican Texas and Democratic New York, California and Illinois have also flipped to the Republican presidential contender from 2008, when they endorsed Obama."
As they say, so goes the Pensacola News Journal, so goes the nation. | 2.) Sen. Disappointment -- Jim Webb has lived a bold and colorful life. His career in the Senate, however, hasn't quite measured up, opines The Daily Caller News Foundation's Jim Antle:
"On the major issues of the last four years, Webb voted in lockstep with Barack Obama on the health care bill Virginia took the lead in fighting and the stimulus package that borrowed $1 trillion to produce barely 2 percent economic growth two years later. The highlight of Webb’s Senate career was probably when he had a staffer bring a loaded gun into the Russell Building. It has been said that Daniel Patrick Moynihan talked like Irving Kristol but voted like Walter Mondale. Jim Webb wrote like Pat Buchanan but votes like Harry Reid."
Suggestion to liven things up? Webb should challenge Oliver North to a boxing rematch. The two engaged in a match of fisticuffs when they were both midshipmen at the Naval Academy. North won in an upset. | 3.) Union politics -- Do unions force their members to volunteer for Democratic campaigns? TheDC's David Martosko reports:
"In a case that could have wide-ranging implications for the political future of the Service Employees International Union, a former SEIU organizer told a right-to-work group and a best-selling author recently that the union forced him and other workers to volunteer their time for Democratic political campaigns. On a video segment provided exclusively to The Daily Caller, the organizer says he and other SEIU staff 'had to do some political work. We were required as staff to do that.'"
TheDC Morning suspects that most people just assumed this was true, like they assume the Pope is Catholic. | 4.) George Will owns Andrew Sullivan -- If commentator Andrew Sullivan's 10-year-plan was to become steadily more preposterous as a political commentator, he's done a stellar job achieving it. On ABC's "This Week" Sunday, Sullivan suggested that if Virginia and Florida go for Gov. Romney, "it’s the Confederacy, entirely." His seeming point was thoroughly shot down by conservative commentator George Will, reports TheDC's Jeff Poor:
"Democrats have been losing the white vote constantly since 1964, so that’s not new,” Will said. “Here’s what we’re trying to talk about --- 2008, Obama gets that many white votes. This time the polls indicate he may get this many. We’re trying to explain this difference. Now, two possible explanations --- a lot of white people that voted for Obama in 2008 watched him govern for four years and said, ‘Not so good, let’s try someone else.’ The alternative --- the Confederacy hypothesis is those people for some reason somehow the last four years became racists."
When Sullivan tried to clarify his point, Will eviscerated his clarification. Watch the video. It's well worth it. | 5.) "The Lizard King" quote of the day -- From "The Lizard King: The Shocking Inside Account of Obama’s True Intergalactic Ambitions By An Anonymous White House Staffer," edited and introduced by Daily Caller writers Jamie Weinstein and Will Rahn:
"The colonel then pointed to a picture hanging on the wall. It was of Obama and bin Laden. Obama was sporting the college Afro we often see in pictures from his college days. Bin Laden had his arm around him and they were smiling. As I looked more closely at the other pictures in the compound, there were many more of Obama. There was Obama and bin Laden drinking tea together, giving each other high-fives, holding a dead goat, and wielding shoulder-fired missiles, the kind that ultimately helped the Afghans defeat the Soviets. There was even one where the two were playing what appeared to be a version of pin the tail on the donkey but instead of a pin they seemed to be using a knife and instead of a donkey there was a picture of Salman Rushdie."
