David Petraeus's resignation from the CIA following an extramarital affair with biographer Paula Broadwell, newshounds were quick to investigate past stories pointing to the revelation—and found a letter written to The Ethicist column published in The New York Times on July 13. In it, an anonymous man, now speculated to be Broadwell's husband, sought advice on whether to expose his wife's affair with a "government executive" whose work "is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership.” Ethicist columnist Chuck Klosterman advises the letter-writer to not to “expose the relationship in any public way,” but also says somewhat tellingly he “halfway suspects” the letter-writer hoped the people involved in the affair would read it—and proclaims “that’s not ethical either.” BOOK BEAST Nate Silver, the statistician and author of the new book The Signal and the Noise, who has now predicted two presidential elections with astounding accuracy, on the principles he abides by. Paying Respect Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot last month for working to support girls' education, is continuing to benefit education in her country even while she recovers in a British hospital. On Friday, Pakistan's president added his signature to a petition asking the government to pay stipends to needy families sending their children to school. The move comes just in time for Malala Day, declared by the government in support of Yousafzai's education campaign. Violence At least 27 people were killed and 59 injured overnight when Sri Lanka's biggest prison erupted in violence. The riot began when officers searched the prison for drugs and illegal cellphones. Prisoners began attacking the police with rocks and eventually with weapons stolen from the prison's armory. The Army was eventually brought in to bring the 4,500-inmate prison under control. | |
