NATO gives go-ahead to send Turkey Patriot missiles
NATO has approved Turkey's request for systems to bolster its defense against Syria. The news comes after the UN announced it would withdraw nonessential staff owing to the worsening security situation.

Riot police use tear gas against anti-Morsi protesters in Egypt
Egyptian riot police have fired tear gas at protesters demonstrating against President Mohammed Morsi near the presidential palace in Cairo. Egyptian independent newspapers have also halted work in protest of the leader.

Israel stays settlement course despite allies' appeals
Israel has stuck to its plans to widen its settlement activities in the aftermath of the UN's partial recognition of a Palestinian state. Back in New York, the General Assembly urged Israel to let in nuclear inspectors.

Germany's Christian Democrats choose Merkel as party chair
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has swept the votes at her party's annual conference, winning the party chair for the seventh time. She now stands poised to begin her national campaign for re-election in 2013.

French president inaugurates Louvre-offshoot in old mining town
French President Francois Hollande has inaugurated a new Louvre museum in northern France. Leaders hope the site, an offshoot of one of the world's most famous museums, can bring life back into the coal town.

Germany and Norway link up in renewable energy deal
Germany and Norway have signed a contract for a high-voltage undersea cable aimed at exchanging surplus renewable energy. The project is essential for Germany's plan to phase out nuclear power by 2022.

Rising overseas demand props up German exports
Germany has avoided falling back into recession in 2012 thanks to robust demand for its goods in countries outside of the EU. In the third quarter, exports made healthy gains in spite of a weaker global economy.
