Cheat Sheet - Meet Baauer, the Man Behind the ‘Harlem Shake’

Cheat Sheet: Morning

February 18, 2013
EXCLUSIVE

In his first interview since his song 'Harlem Shake' went viral, DJ and music producer Baauer tells The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern about his rise to stardom and the Internet craze he started. Baauer will also be participating in a Reddit AMA at 4 p.m. ET on Monday.

TEN THOUSAND ANGELS

Troubled country singer Mindy McCready, who once appeared on Celebrity Rehab and had publicly struggled with addiction and mental illness, was found dead in her home on Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was 37. Just one month ago, McCready's boyfriend—and father to her 10-month-old son—also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She had a decade-long affair with star pitcher Roger Clemens, and in 2005, her tumultuous relationship with Tim McKnight led to his arrest for allegedly beating and choking her. By the end of the following year, she faced a variety of her own charges—and allegedly tried to take her own life. She leaves behind two children: six-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zayne.

BLADE RUNNER

Steroids were reportedly found at the home of Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic sprinter accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend, reality television star and model Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, 26, is expected to appear in court on Tuesday on murder charges. Steenkamp, 29, was found dead from several gunshot wounds early Friday at Pistorius's home. Since then, police reportedly have found a bloody cricket bat at the house, suggesting there had been a struggle. Sources told the South African City Press that Steenkamp's skull was "crushed," and they are examining the bat to see if the blood came from a blow to the back of her head. Police are also reportedly testing Pistorius for steroids.

CONFLICT

The United Nations said on Monday that it has a list of war criminals in the country's two-year civil war—from both sides of the conflict. Based on 445 interviews conducted abroad with victims and witnesses, the U.N. said Syrians in "leadership positions" in government and among the armed rebels are committing the crimes, including killings and torture. The list will be kept secret, but the independent team of investigators called upon the U.N. Security Council to "act urgently to ensure accountability," suggesting the violators could end up in front of the International Criminal Court. The death toll in Syria's ongoing civil war is nearing 70,000, said the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
