TRAGEDY The district attorney of Kaufman, Texas, Mike McLelland, 63, and his wife, Cynthia Woodward McLelland, 65, were found shot and killed on Saturday in their home, just weeks after his deputy was killed. One law enforcement officer said it appeared the door had been kicked in and "there were shell casings everywhere." Authorities in Kaufman county said they believed all other employees in the district attorney's office have been accounted for, and police are investigating whether the McLellands' deaths are related to the killing of Mark Hasse, a Kaufman county prosecutor who was killed on Jan. 31 while walking to his car. The FBI had also been investigating in Hasse's death was linked to the murder of Colorado prison chief Tom Clements. TENSION The Kenyan courts on Saturday confirmed Uhuru Kenyatta's victory in the March 4 election, despite a challenge by Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Police clashed with a few dozen protesters on Sunday after the verdict in Kisumu, where Odinga still holds popular support. Two people were killed and another 11 injured in Kisumu, while all the shops were looted on Saturday. But in the Nairobi slums of Kibera and Mathare, where Odinga is popular, most people did not want to return to the devastating violence of 2007, when more than 1,200 people were killed after the election. After Saturday's verdict, Odinga urged his followers to find "peaceful ways" to protest the outcome. NOT SO INCREDIBLE India's foreign tourism has dropped 25 percent—and female tourists have dropped 35 percent—in the past three months since the Delhi gang rape, according to a report by the industry body Assocham. The most cancellations are coming from the U.S., Britain, Canada –whose tourists are apparently opting for Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. As a result, many Indian hotels have instituted new measures to help women feel safe, including allowing them to stay near elevators, dedicated women's wing or floor, allowing women to check right in their rooms rather than wait in the lobby, and an increase in female staff, including butlers. | |
