Cheat Sheet - The Real Benghazi Scandal

Today: FBI Probes Chechen Rebel , The IRS Will Come for You Next, Unless Congress Acts Now , $1M in Jewelry Stolen in Cannes
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

May 17, 2013
Truth? Justice?

The most important question being asked in Washington about what happened in Benghazi should be: has justice been done? The answer to that is "no," and the CIA bears the main responsibility for the intelligence failures that led to last year's atrocity, says The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey.

Boston Bombing

The FBI has searched the home of an exiled former Chechen rebel after learning that he met with main Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev less than a month before he allegedly carried out the deadly attack. Musa Khadjimuradov confirms that FBI investigators came to his house Tuesday and examined the hard drives of his computers and questioned him about Tsarnaev's visits to a shooting range and fireworks purchases. Khadjimuradov came to the U.S. from Chechnya in 2004 as part of the U.N. refugee program and met Tsarnaev through the Chechen Society of Boston. He says Tsarnaev visited him three times, the last time with his family.

IRS Scandal

IRS commissioner Steven Miller offered an apology to Congress Friday, calling the inappropriate targeting of conservative groups in 2012 a "mistake." But the IRS scandal isn't about politics—it's about your civil liberties. Congress needs to make sure it never happens again, writes Matt Kibbe, CEO of conservative activist group FreedomWorks.

Robbed in the Riviera

A-listers walking the red carpet in Cannes this week will be excused for not accessorizing their gowns with the usual bling. More than $1 million in jewelry was stolen from a Cannes hotel room where an employee of jewelry-maker Chopard was staying. The thief reportedly ripped the room's safe out of the wall of the employee's Novotel hotel room, making off with baubles meant for celebrities to wear to the film festival's glitzy parties and premiere events. Cannes jewel robberies is a bit of a tradition at this point: $8 million worth was stolen in one 2009 incident, while a group of thieves during that same festival rode away with $21 million in Cartier bling.

THINKING AHEAD

Russia is concerned about what kind of instability awaits once the last NATO-led troops have left Afghanistan next year. According to a new report Friday, the nation is considering sending its own security agents to monitor the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Moscow is allegedly most concerned about drugs and terrorists making their way from Afghanistan to Russia through the former Soviet nations—which stand between them. "We prefer to tackle this problem on the Afghan border to stop these threats," Ambassador Andrey Avetisyan said at the Russian Embassy in Kabul late Thursday. "We used to have a serious presence on the Afghan-Tajik border … and the situation there was much better, so it would be in the interest of both Russia and Tajikistan and even Afghanistan if Russia is present there."
