Thousands gathered in Cairo on Sunday as part of a mass protest against President Morsi that called for his resignation, while his supporters held a competing rally at the presidential palace. Sunday marks the first anniversary of Morsi's inauguration, and his opponents have spent the past three days in mass protests against his rule. Although there are still many Egyptians who believe that Morsi was democratically elected and should carry out his term in office, a grassroots organization Tamarod claimed to have signatures from 22 million Egyptians calling for the president's resignation.  Tamarod has vowed to continue their protests until Morsi resigns, but they face steep odds of being able to hold large rallies: July heat in Cairo is brutal and Ramadam begins July 8th. Obama Announces 'Power Africa' President Obama announced on Sunday a $7 billion aid program called "Power Africa" that aims to bring more electricity to sub-Saharan African. An estimated two-thirds of South Africans do not have access to electricity—and that number climbs up to 85 percent in rural areas. It will take an estimated $300 billion to fully supply the continent with power, and the $7 billion U.S. aid will not only provide technical assistance, but also grants and tools for risk mitigation. Meanwhile, Obama is due to visit Robben Island, the notorious prison where South African President Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. Southwest Heat Wave Kills One Temperatures in the Southwest topped 100 on Saturday as forecasters warned the extreme heat could last for days. In Las Vegas, where temperatures reached 115 degrees, an elderly man was found dead in his un-air conditioned house on Saturday from a cardiac arrest believed to have been from the heat. Las Vegas paramedics said they responded to two other heat-related medical calls, a callback to the 2005 heatwave that killed 17. Flights at Phoenix airports were halted on Saturday after the temperature hit 119 degrees—planes are certified to take off only up to 118 degrees.
