Remember when he said he wanted to work toward ridding the world of nuclear weapons? Well, he meant it. And he's willing to take one for the cause as long as Russia does, too. Obama called on the Russian government to join the U.S. in cutting the number of strategic nuclear warheads it deploys. The president will elaborate on his proposal Wednesday at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a historically significant setting along the line where a wall once divided the German city that is sure to evoke memories of the Cold War that enhance Obama's argument. The Uncertain Science of Fetal Pain As the Republican-led House of Representatives passes a far-reaching bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks based on the science of "fetal pain," The Daily Beast's Michelle Goldberg reports on whether the unborn can feel hurt. Karzai Doesn't Want to Talk to the U.S. It seems not everyone was on board with the U.S.'s big plan to orchestrate peace talks with Afghanistan and the Taliban. Apparently Afghan President Hamid Karzai was not included in the U.S. and Taliban leaders' initial discussion on peace negotiations, and Karzai really hates being left out. Also, the way the Taliban so rudely interrupted Karzai's big national-security handover ceremony Wednesday with that nearby bombing just wasn't cool. So in protest, he's giving the U.S. the silent treatment—suspending a separate talk they'd had planned on a bilateral security agreement for Afghanistan's future. Michael Hastings Dead at 33 Journalist Michael Hastings died on Tuesday morning in a car accident, according to a statement from Buzzfeed's editor in chief, Ben Smith. He was 33 years old. "We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone. Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians," the statement read. Hastings is perhaps best known for the scathing profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal published in Rolling Stone in 2010, which ended in the Army general's resignation.
