Turkish Police Storm Taksim Square Turkish police on Tuesday stormed Istanbul's Taksim Square, the heart of the two-week-long protests against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. The governor of Istanbul wrote on Twitter that the police had only arrived to remove banners, but witnesses reported that police pushed past the protesters' barricades, blocked all the exits, and fired water cannons. The demonstrators responded by throwing Molotov cocktails, rocks, and fireworks. Meanwhile, Erdogan told his party's M.P.s that the protests have hurt the country's image and economy. Protests in Taksim Square started on May 31 as a demonstration against plans to raze Istanbul's Gezi Park but soon spread across the country as a more widespread call to action against Erdogan's government. Santa Monica Shooter Had Troubled History John Zawahri, 24, the man accused of going on a rampage at Santa Monica College on Friday that left four people dead before police shot and killed him, had spent time in a mental hospital as a teenager after a teacher reported him for surfing the Internet for assault weapons. Authorities are trying to learn more about why Zawahri, armed with assault weapons, went on the deadly rampage that started with killing his father and brother, and then burning down their house. Meanwhile, Zawahri's mother, Randa Abdou, issued a statement Monday saying she is "in mourning for my family and those who were also affected by this horrific tragedy." Police sources said Zawahri had struggled after his parents' bitter divorce years ago, and a former teacher of Zawahri's said his mother told her that she was the victim of domestic abuse. U.S. to Drop Plan B Limits The U.S. government is stepping down on its attempt to block over-the-counter access to a morning-after contraceptive pill for women and girls of all ages. The Justice Department had been trying to appeal a judge's order to allow anyone to purchase the pill, Plan B One-Step, without a prescription. The decision appears to be based on a conclusion that the government might lose the sensitive case on appeal and would have to take it to the Supreme Court. The FDA said in a statement that once the pill comes up for approval, it will be approved "promptly."
