Gene Tests Likely to Spread Immediately after the Supreme Court's ruling Thursday against the patenting of genes, several laboratories said they would begin genetic testing for breast cancer, an early sign of the likelihood that the tests will become more widely available and affordable. "It levels the playing field; we can all go out and compete," the head of one testing company said. The ruling broke a nearly two-decade monopoly by Myriad Genetics on testing for mutations of the BRCA genes that indicate breast cancer. It will not, however, have much effect on the pharmaceutical or genetically engineered agriculture industries, both of which more often use synthetic DNA that is not covered by the decision. Turkish PM Concedes to Protesters The raucous protests that have rocked Istanbul over the past week seem to be wrapping up after representatives for the demonstrators met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan overnight Thursday. Erdoğan agreed to postpone controversial plans to remake Istanbul's Gezi Park, which has become the center of the protests, until after a court ruling on the matter. His government had planned to build a shopping center in the shape of an Ottoman-era barracks on the space, igniting resistance from Turkish professionals, students, and workers against what they saw as encroachment by an Islamic government on the country's secular laws. Three people have been killed and as many as 5,000 detained in Turkey's worst unrest in years. Read it at Al-Jazeera Boys' Club 5. Women Face CIA Glass Ceiling President Obama's surprise appointment of Avril Haines, a White House lawyer, to deputy CIA director highlighted a glass ceiling women still face at the spy agency. Former director David Petraeus was startled to discover that women held only 19 percent of the CIA's top posts, and ordered an internal study of the problem. The report, released without much attention this spring, concluded that the CIA's culture fails to sponsor and promote female officers. Among other issues, the report's co-author said that the agency's failure to address work-life balance issues made it particularly difficult for women to pursue top jobs. The problem is common across government agencies, where only 31 percent of top positions are held by women.
