Senate Confirms New Labor Secretary Whoa, the Senate was productive today! After months of delay, Tom Perez was confirmed as head of the Department of Labor on a 54-46 vote. He now becomes the only Latino in President Obama's cabinet. Perez was one of Obama's numerous federal nominees backlogged by Republican filibusters, but the vote was finally allowed as part of a deal struck earlier this week by majority leader Harry Reid. Perez was previously head of the civil rights division at the Justice Department, and Republicans have, as usual, criticized him as being a liberal ideologue. Read it at ABC News STRANGE TURN 3. Key Witness in Bulger Case Found Dead Authorities have positively identified a corpse found near a walking path in Lincoln, Massachusetts as the body of Stephen Rakes, a leading witness in the case against notorious Boston mobster Whitey Bulger. A South Boston native in his late 50s, Rakes had planned to testify that Bulger took over his liquor store at gunpoint and turned it into his own headquarters. After identifying the body, police said the death appeared to be a suicide. But close companions of the victim remain skeptical. "[He] would not kill himself. Absolutely not,'' said longtime friend Steve Davis. "He was looking forward to taking the stand. He told me over and over he had a big bombshell to drop." Kate's Mum: Royal Baby Not Due Till July 23rd Journalists and cameramen waiting outside of a London hospital for Kate Middleton to go into labor might want to get comfortable. Zimmerman Jury Got Pedicures Sounds more like vacation than sequestration. The Seminole County Sheriff's office has released a $33,000 bill for the 22-day sequestration of the six women jurors in the George Zimmerman trial. While holed up in individual rooms in the Florida Marriott, jurors watched TV, exercised, and visited with family and friends. They also went on field trips to the movies, bowling, and to Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum and enjoyed manicures and pedicures. And for dinner? Outback Steakhouse. While it might seem like the sequestered women were living it up, they allegedly paid for personal purchases and appointments. Plus, they earned a little R&R. Florida attorney Randy Reep put it this way: "A Bloomin' Onion at Outback would not adequately reimburse these women for the bitterness" that they might receive.
