The George Zimmerman trial hit a snag once again as the defense haggled with the judge over juror instructions. Jacqui Goddard on the latest from the closing arguments.

DNA FOR THE WIN

DNA evidence undreamt of in the 1960s has produced a major development in the 1964 rape and murder of 19-year-old Mary Sullivan—the final of 11 possible victims attributed to the notorious Boston Strangler. At a press conference Thursday, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced that a test of DNA samples taken from stains on Sullivan's blanket had resulted in a "familial match" to Albert DeSalvo, the prime suspect in the case. Experts used DNA from a bottle discarded by one of DeSalvo's nephews to make the match. DeSalvo was never charged for the murders because a recanted confession had been ruled inadmissible in court. In 1973, he was stabbed to death in a Massachusetts prison while serving a life sentence for unrelated charges.

what coup?

The U.S. isn't changing plans to deliver four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt, even after the military ousted President Morsi last week. U.S. defense officials told Reuters the planes would probably be sent in August as part of the yearly aid package. If the U.S. brands the overthrow of Morsi as a coup, it would be required by law to halt aid to the military, but Washington says it needs time to decide how to brand the situation. "it's our view that we should not ... hastily change our aid programs" White House spokesman Jay Carney said. Eight more F-16s are due to be delivered in December as part of a package of 20 jets.

SHUT DOWN

A speech by Sarah Slamen, a 28-year-old Texas woman, was cut short on Monday while protesters rallied against the Texas anti-abortion bill that might shut down most abortion clinics and prevent abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. During a hearing in the state Senate, the woman was interrupted by senators and removed from the room by state troopers, as seen in a YouTube video. In her speech, she noted, "Thank you for every hateful statement degrading women and girls to sex objects and blood mares and bald eagles, and leather wallets, like your eloquent pro-life supporters have done today." As she was taken away, Slamen called the legislature a "farce" and a "bunch of liars." Pro-choice activists are attempting to overthrow the bill in its second session, after a filibuster helped in the first. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill in the next 48 hours.
