DOJ to Challenge States Voting Laws Not so fast, Texas. Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Thursday that the Justice Department would challenge Southern states, starting with Texas, that immediately moved to enact or enforce new restrictive voting laws after the Supreme Court overturned a key part of the Voting Rights Act last month. In a speech to the National Urban League in Philadelphia, Holder said that he planned to subject Texas, the first state to jump at the chance to impose new voter-ID and redistricting laws, to "preclearance" requirements. "Even as Congress considers updates to the Voting Rights Act in light of the court's ruling, we plan, in the meantime, to fully utilize the law's remaining sections to subject states to preclearance as necessary," Holder said. Derailed Train Was Speeding Spain's transportation secretary said Thursday that a passenger train that derailed Wednesday was traveling too fast, giving credence to media reports that suggested it might have been moving at as much as twice the speed limit around a curve. The derailment, one of the worst in Spanish history, left 78 people dead and 140 injured. The train was arriving at Santiago de Compostela, ahead of a major Christian festival in the religious city. Anthony Weiner had retained his lead in the New York city mayoral race after coming clean about his continued sexting with young women following his resignation from Congress, but a new poll from NBC and The Wall Street Journal shows his support has plummeted 14 percentage points.
