HOKEY POKEY

As Chris Christie gears up for 2016, the famously plain-speaking New Jersey governor is elaborately positioning himself to reassure the GOP base without losing his centrist appeal, writes The Daily Beast's Michelle Cottle.

ALLEGED WAR CRIMES

Two Syrian rebel groups claimed that government forces used nerve gas in Damascus on Wednesday, reportedly killing hundreds. Activists claimed that up to 600 people had been killed in the attack, and hundreds more were reportedly wounded. The two groups said that rockets that were filled with poisonous gas were fired into the capital, and amateur video found online showed victims sprawled out on hospital floors, with others being treated with hand-pump respirators. The government of President Bashar al-Assad denied using chemical weapons, calling the claims "baseless" on state-run television. The attack comes just one day after chemical weapons experts were sent to Damascus by the United Nations to investigate the government's alleged use of nerve gas.

TURNOFF

Al Jazeera America made its U.S. TV debut in a relentlessly responsible fashion. The Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove says it's all spinach, no chocolate cake.

MORE DETAILS

The family of James Lee DiMaggio, who was shot to death last week after allegedly kidnapping Hannah Anderson and is accused of killing her mother and brother, has demanded a DNA test—claiming that DiMaggio could be the father of the kids. A spokesman for the DiMaggio family said it raised red flags with them when they found out that DiMaggio had Bernice Anderson, Hannah and her brother Ethan's grandmother, as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy for an estimated $110,000. DiMaggio had been a close family friend—the kids called him "Uncle Jim"—and some have raised concerns that 16-year-old Hannah had been seen with him prior to her mother's and brother's deaths. San Diego police have said that DiMaggio allegedly tortured and killed Christian Anderson, Hannah's mother, and Ethan, 8, before their bodies were left in a burning house.

FRIEND REQUEST

Get ready for friend requests from the developing world. Facebook will make a play to bring the social-media network to the 4 billion or so in the developing world without Internet access by launching Internet.org, which will drastically cut the cost of delivering the Internet on mobile phones. A handful of other tech giants, including Samsung, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Ericsson, have also signed on to the initiative. The goal is to simplify phone applications so they run more efficiently as well as allow phones to transmit more data while using less battery power. It follows similar initiatives from Google (which began a program with phone carriers last year to offer wireless users in developing countries free access to Gmail) and Twitter (which has struck its own deal with 250 cellphone companies in 100 countries to offer free Twitter access).
