Obama to Meet with Officials About Syria President Obama is scheduled to meet with his national security team on Saturday, days after the Syrian government allegedly used chemical weapons on civilians near Damascus. "We have a range of options available, and we are going to act very deliberately," said a White House official. Although the U.S. government has so far been reluctant to get involved in Syria's civil war, this recent move could prove a turning point. A year ago, Obama said that chemical weapons represented a "red line" for the government's (in)actions with regard to Syria. Meanwhile, the UN is also pressing for action, as the body's disarmament chief arrived in Damascus on Saturday to press for an inquiry into the alleged chemical use. San Francisco Declares State of Emergency The barely-contained wildfire that spread into Yosemite National Park earlier this week now has its sights set on San Francisco. Don't worry, the city isn't about to be engulfed in flames—at least not yet. But its utilities, some of which are located close to Yosemite, were threatened enough by Friday that California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for the city on Friday afternoon. The 200-square-mile Rim Fire had already damaged some of the electrical infrastructure that supplies power to the Bay Area by the time Brown made his declaration. What's more, 85 percent of the region's water comes from a reservoir just four miles from the fire. About 2,700 firefighters are working to contain the flames. Read it at NPR 'We Shall Overcome' 5. Activists Commemorate March on Washington 50 years ago Saturday, thousands of activists descended on Washington, D.C., to peacefully rally for equal civil and economic rights for blacks. On the golden anniversary of the March on Washington, thousands once more headed to the National Mall to commemorate the event and discuss how far there is to go, featuring speakers such as Eric Holder and Al Sharpton. During the original March, Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, which contemporary marchers will recognize as they make their way from the Lincoln Memorial, past the memorial to King, and arrive at the Washington Monument. The president commemorated the civil rights landmark in a speech on Friday, saying, "We've made enormous strides," but that there are many institutional barriers yet to overcome.
