A-FRAUD

He won't get the lifetime ban, just a suspension of more than 200 games, but for the player who was supposed to break the home-run record, it's a disaster—and an era-defining moment for baseball, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Brendan Dougherty.

BICKERING BEMOTHS

A dispute over fees between two multibillion-dollar companies means millions of subscribers have lost the CBS network. The Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove says cable viewers are getting screwed.

LOOKING GRIM

On Sunday, the U.S. closed down 21 embassies across North Africa and the Middle Eastsome of which will stay shuttered from as long as a weekdue to intelligence of a potential al Qaeda–inspired attack. Earlier in the day, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, revealed that messages intercepted have similarities to the "chatter" that preceded 9/11. "This is the most serious threat I've seen in the last several years," he said. Although information on the threat is not available to the public, another senator claimed the administration has identified 25 embassies that are particularly at risk. Diplomatic missions in Algiers, Kabul, and Baghdad will reopen Monday.

LET'S GIVE IT A TRY

U.S. Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham will arrive in Cairo Monday in an effort to revive a diplomatic end to the crumbling political situation. The envoys will reportedly meet with jailed members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the party of former president Mohamed Morsi, who was overthrown in a military coup in July. More than 100 pro-Morsi supporters have been killed in violence since the July coup, and two mass sit-ins were held just this past weekend in support of Morsi. Over the weekend, Deputy U.S. Secretary of State William Burns held talks with members of the Brotherhood as well as a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and the European Union. Army chief Gen. Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has insisted peace is possible if all sides reject violence.

BLOODY BEACH

Los Angeles police arrested a suspect who allegedly drove into a crowd at the Venice Beach boardwalk Saturday evening, killing one woman and injuring 11 other people. The woman who died was an Italian newlywed on her honeymoon. Thirty-eight-year-old Nathan Campbell turned himself in two hours after the attack and is now in jail, with bail set at $1 million. Witnesses said the driver seemed in control of the vehicle and was deliberately trying to run people over. One witness told KCBS: "The driver was out for blood."
