POLITICAL UPHEAVAL

Bill de Blasio's win in New York's Democratic primary isn't a local story. It's part of a vast shift that could upend three decades of American political thinking. A Daily Beast feature by Peter Beinart.

DIPLOMACY

Secretary of State John Kerry reaffirmed today the U.S. desire for diplomacy in dealing with the Syrian crisis, but warned there would be consequences, including military force, if negotiations over the country's chemical weapons failed. "This is not a game," he said, in a joint statement with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today in Geneva. "It has to be real ... it has to be credible." Kerry also rejected Syria's proposed 30-day timetable for declaring its stockpile because, he said, "there is nothing standard about this process at this moment ... The words of the regime, in our judgment, is simply not enough."

DISTURBING

A 40-year-old Boston man who plotted to kill, rape, and eat kids in his basement is likely to spend the next 27 years in jail, authorities said Thursday. Geoffrey Portway, who pleaded guilty in May to possession of child pornography and solicitation to commit a crime of violence, will be sentenced on September 17. When authorities searched the home of "Fat Longpig" (the name Portway used online), they found disturbing items including a child-sized coffin, disposable scalpels, and castration tools. "Portway has pled guilty to some of the most vile and heinous crimes known to our society," prosecutors wrote in a statement.

SUDDEN

Hundreds have been evacuated amid flash floods in Boulder, Colorado early Thursday morning, including one man who was pulled from a submerged car. The streets of Boulder are impassable after the rains, and several homes collapsed in nearby Jamestown. Students were ordered to leave university housing at the University of Colorado-Boulder, which is closed Thursday morning. At least three people have died in the disaster.
