PRESSURE

Progress? Russia has backed Secretary of State John Kerry's challenge to Syria to put its chemical weapons under international control in order to avoid a U.S. strike—and Syria's foreign minister reportedly "welcomes" the idea. Syria's president Bashar al-Assad, however, won't confirm that he even has chemical weapons. Watch that assertion and more in our roundup of the most chilling moments from Assad's interview with Charlie Rose.

FINE ART

For the first time in 40 years, Amsterdam's van Gogh museum unveiled a new painting by the master, which will be on exhibit starting on September 24. Titled "Sunset at Montmajour," the work is believed to have been painted in Arles in 1888—and completely unknown to literature. But the work isn't all that new, writes The Daily Beast's Blake Gopnik. It just used to be known as a fake.

BREAST CANCER

A new study from researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital has found that mammograms given before the age of 50 could sharply reduce breast cancer deaths. The research followed women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1990 and 1999. Out of 609 women who died from breast cancer, 71 percent never had a mammogram before their diagnosis. Half of the deaths were women who were younger than 50. The findings are sure to cause some controversy. For years women were told to start getting mammograms around the age of 40, but in 2009, the United States Preventive Services Task Force released guidelines that said women shouldn't start until age 50.

Infidelity

If you want to keep affairs secret, don't keep a ledger recording every infidelity. New York Post says it got its hands on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s diary from 2001, which, along with a record of his daily speeches and activism, includes the names of 37 women he had extramarital encounters with and a number corresponding to the sexual act. The diary is full of guilt and remorse, according to the Post, with affair-less days labeled "victory" and fond entries about his time in a Puerto Rican prison, where women were absent. Kennedy's wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, committed suicide last year after Kennedy filed for divorce. Kennedy told the Post he had no diary from 2001.

Seriously

Dennis Rodman is going to train the North Korean basketball team for the Olympics. In a press conference Monday morning, the former NBA star and current Kim Jong-un BFF said he would work to "bridge a gap" between North Korea and the U.S. "Sports is the No. 1 thing in the world that keep people together," Rodman remarked. He's also planning a special basketball tournament in honor of Kim's birthday—the Korean Ministry of Sports will be footing the bill. When asked which five dictators he would pick for his starting lineup, Rodman responded, "This is not a joke." Really?
