IN IT FOR THE MONEY

Ted Cruz's war against Obamacare is a racket to raise his profile and millions of dollars. The Daily Beast's Patricia Murphy says even his Republican colleagues loathe him. Plus, Ben Jacobs liveblogs Cruz's epic fauxlibuster, Michael Tomasky on how the GOP will bow to Cruz, Nick Gillespie says Ted Cruz may have just won the future for the GOP, and Jamelle Bouie on how the GOP is still chained to the base.

NOW WHAT?

Militants from the al Qaeda-linked network al-Shabab said Wednesday that 137 hostages had been killed in the terror attack at a Kenyan mall, although that number could not be verified. President Uhuru Kenyatta said 67 people died, including six security personnel. The siege killed five militants and another 11 suspects have been arrested, including a British national. It's still unclear if Samantha Lewthwaite, the so-called "white widow" of a London 7/7 bomber, is among those militants killed. Kenya has begun three days of national mourning, and the BBC reported that the shopping center remained largely silent overnight, although light smoke was still seen coming from the building.

TRAGEDY

A powerful earthquake killed at least 250 people and injured 340 more in Pakistan's remote southwest province of Balochistan on Tuesday, flattening entire villages and even causing a new small island to appear off near the port of Gwadar. The 7.7-magnitude quake was so powerful that it could be felt as far away as Karachi and even in India's Delhi. Already a presence in the area due to the separatist Baloch insurgency, Pakistan's military responded quickly in the regional capital, Quetta, but the mountainous terrain has made it difficult to reach survivors.

WATCH OUT

Maybe Djibouti would feel differently if they knew about the pizza delivery drone. The Djibouti government's fears about accidents and other mishaps has caused the U.S. government to relocate a large fleet of drones in this Horn of Africa nation. The drones have been moved temporarily to a makeshift airstrip from the U.S. military base Camp Lemonnier, the U.S. hub for counterterrorism operations in Yemen and Somalia and the key center of operations in the fight against al-Shabab, al Qaeda's wing in Somalia that has claimed responsibility for the Nairobi mall siege. The Pentagon has pledged $1 billion to upgrade Camp Lemonnier to a major regional base, but it's unclear how moving the drones will affect those plans.

EXCLUSIVE

At least two people have turned down a chance to replace Janet Napolitano as head of Homeland Security, The Daily Beast's Daniel Klaidman reports. And one likely candidate hasn't even been interviewed.
