Some of Rupert Murdoch's most trusted news executives, including Rebekah Brooks, appeared in court Monday for the start of a criminal trial into the phone hacking allegations that shuttered the News of the World. The Daily Beast's Peter Jukes and Nico Hines report.

TRAGEDY

At least five people are dead and dozens more were injured Monday when a car slammed into Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the site of the 1989 riots. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying would not comment if it was a terrorist attack, given the symbolic history of the site. The car crashed directly into the main entrance of the Forbidden City, where there is a huge portrait of Mao Zedong. All three people in the car were killed.

CASE CLOSED?

Penn State announced Monday that the university will pay 26 men $59.7 million over claims of sexual abuse by former coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted last year of 45 counts of sexual abuse. Penn State said it had concluded the year-long negotiations, with 23 of the deals signed and the other three having agreements in principle. The school faces six other claims, but it says those do not have merit. Sandusky has maintained his innocence and is seeking to appeal his 30 to 60 year sentence.

CLEAN BREAK

Four inmates are on the run after escaping from an Oklahoma jail, which officials had thought to be "escape proof" on Sunday morning. Dylan Ray Three Irons, 21, Prime Tounwin Brown, 23, Anthony James Mendonca, 24, and Triston Cheadle. 32, were set to be transferred to state prison for charges ranging from drugs to guns, but managed to get away by breaking a lock and slipping through a shower hatch that led to an unlocked door where they just walked right out. "They wasn't armed when they left, but we don't know what they got when they get out," the local sheriff said. Reassuring.
