Afghan Deal Nears Collapse The deal for Afghan troop withdrawal is nearing total collapse as President Hamid Karzai is now refusing to sign it. White House adviser Susan Rice and Karzai issued dueling statements on Tuesday with Rice threatening the "zero option," a complete withdrawal that would be similar to the plan initiated in Iraq two years ago. Meanwhile, Taliban commanders say any continued U.S. presence will ensure "jihad forever," according to The Daily Beast's Ron Moreau and Sami Yousafzai. Read it at The Daily Beast Exclusive 2. Russia Violated Nuke Treaty The Kremlin cheated on a nuclear pact it signed with the United States, the U.S. government believes—and Secretary Kerry was briefed on the violations almost a year ago, writes The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin. "If we're going to have treaties with people, we've got to adhere to them," Kerry said during a closed-door session with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, according to two sources with access to the transcript. "We're not going to pass another treaty in the U.S. Senate if our colleagues are sitting up here knowing somebody is cheating." Read it at The Daily Beast GET MOVING 3. Obama Pushes for Immigration Bill Good luck with the Thanksgiving approach there. President Obama on Monday urged House Republicans to back an immigration-reform bill that has already been passed by the Democratic-controlled Senate. At a fundraiser in California, Obama said the House could "carve that bill into multiple pieces" to get it passed. Things took a turn for the dramatic, though, when the president began engaging in a dialogue with a heckler behind him (never mind that those people are chosen by the White House). "You have the power to stop all deportations!" the heckler yelled, to which Obama answered "Actually, I don't." The president then turned away from the camera and addressed the man directly. Talk about taking it personally. Read it at Al Jazeera America PENNY LANE 4. Report: U.S. Tried to Turn Gitmo Prisoners This is very strange. The U.S. apparently kept a top-secret detention center at Guantánamo Bay to turn prisoners into double agents—and then sent them off to kill terrorists at home. Called Penny Lane, the facility was housed just a few hundred yards from an administrative office of the prison. Several of the men who passed through Penny Lane would later help the CIA find and kill top al Qaeda operatives, former U.S. officials told the Associated Press. The CIA offered the prisoners freedom, safety for their families—and millions of dollars. The program ended in 2006, but still remains top secret. Now Penny Lane is in our ears and in our eyes. Newtown Report: Adam Lanza's Real Motive The Newtown report might not say directly what Adam Lanza's motive was, but it's pretty clear: He wanted to shoot kids, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Daly. According to the report, there were "materials regarding the topic of pedophilia and advocating for rights for pedophiles," but no child pornography. He also had a video game called "School Shooter."
