Obama Considered Hillary as VP As the 2012 election drew close, White House officials concerned about President Obama's chances considered swapping out Vice President Joe Biden with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the ticket. The revelations come from an upcoming book about the election called Double Down: Game Change 2012. On Thursday, former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley said the plan was rebuked after polls showed it wouldn't improve Obama's prospect. Court Restores TX Abortion Law A federal judge's vindication of Wendy Davis turned out to be short-lived Thursday when the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overruled him and put Texas's strict new abortion law back into effect. The new law requires abortion providers to get admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their clinic—a requirement that may force many of them to close. A panel of three female justices from the 5th Circuit said Planned Parenthood had not shown that the law's detriment to their interests was a "unique burden" on women seeking abortions, and that they expected the state to prevail in future appeals. Food Stamp Cuts Kick In Low-income Americans are bracing for $5 billion in food stamp cuts to go into effect Friday, slashing monthly benefits for the one in seven Americans who depend on them to feed their families. Needy Americans are expected to lose about $36 per month on the average $275.13 household benefit. The cuts are hitting now because extra funding provided in President Obama's 2009 stimulus bill is expiring, and bipartisan groups of lawmakers voted to keep the cuts in exchange for increased education funding and school nutrition programs. In addition to the impact on the poor, the cuts are expected to have a negative impact on the economy, decreasing sales for grocers and other food retailers.
