Court OKs American-US Air Merger In non-storm-related airline news, two of the largest airlines are about to become one. A judge approved a settlement on Wednesday between the Justice Department and the proposed merger between AMR Corp (American Airlines) and US Airways Group Inc. The approval will allow American to exit bankruptcy proceedings and merge to create the largest airline in the world. The DOJ had been opposed to the merger on the grounds that it would be anti-competitive and hurt consumers, but negotiations led to the airlines giving up spots at prominent airports around the country. Read it at NBC News B-52 BRUSH BACK 3. U.S. Flips China the Bird Beijing is furious that two American bomber planes flew over disputed airspace this week—a show of solidarity with Japan. Two American B-52s were spotted Tuesday over disputed islands that the Chinese government had insisted it would defend just last weekend. The very presence of the B-52s suggests that China may have overstated its commitment to defending the islands, but Chinese officials insisted Wednesday they were following the new rules—although they did not offer any specifics. After ruining thousands of people's holiday travel plan, the weather now might ruin millions of people's favorite Thanksgiving entertainment, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. If sustained winds go higher than 23 mph and gusts more than 34 mph, all those fun parade balloons like Snoopy and Sonic won't take off. The forecasts currently predict winds of at least 15 to 20 mph and gusts reaching 40 mph. "We are closely monitoring the weather as we do each year," says Macy's spokeswoman Holly Thomas. "On Thanksgiving morning, Macy's works closely with the NYPD, who, based on real time weather data and the official regulations determine if the balloons will fly and at what heights." World Cup Stadium Collapses At least three people were killed Wednesday when the part of the stadium that will hold the World Cup in 2014 collapsed. The people were killed when a crane collapsed atop a metal structure on the top of the building, causing metal structure to buckle and destroy part of the stands. The Itaquerao Stadium had been nearly completed to meet FIFA's December 2012 deadline to have all 12 venues ready.
