A fourth case of meningococcal disease that leads to meningitis has been confirmed at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The disease, which causes infections in the bloodstream and meningitis, has led the university to stop all fraternity events as well as parties. The bacteria can cause fever, headaches, rash and increased sensitivity. One of the people infected with the disease had to have both feet amputated. All four individuals were infected last month, and the potential number of people exposed is now at 500. Students in dormitories are especially prone, and UCSB has said it is increasing cleanings in residence halls and sports facilities.
