BABY STEPS

As part of sweeping reforms to the NSA, President Obama announced plans to stop the interception of private electronic communications of "dozens" of foreign presidents and prime ministers. The Daily Beast's Eli Lake reports on the president's new promise.

SCORCHED

California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a drought emergency for the entire state just one day after a massive wildfire burned through 1,700 acres of land. With only 30 percent containment of the fire, the governor has called for a voluntary "20 percent conservation" of water use. "We are in a unprecedented, serious situation that people should pause and reflect on how we're dependent on rain, Mother Nature and each other," Brown told reporters. An estimated 3,600 were evacuated—with only 1,600 permitted to return.

THE MAKING OF MITT

The documentary Mitt, premiering at the Sundance Film Festival and being released on Netflix next week, offers a behind-the-scenes look at Romney's failed 2008 and 2012 campaigns. The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern asks what the movie tells us about the man who could have been president.

GET OVER IT

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Yet another voter ID law, this time in Pennsylvania, has been struck down for placing an unreasonable burden on people trying to vote. The law required voters to show photo identification at the voting booth, and was a central part to the 2012 voter identification law. The law had been barred from enforcement since the 2012 election.

OOOOOOK

During a question-and-answer session on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that gay people in Russia should not fear for their safety as long as they "just leave kids alone, please." Gay rights in Russia have come under scrutiny in the run-up to the Winter Olympics, especially after Russia passed a law last year which has been used to ban gay rights marches and the discussion of gay issues in TV and newspapers. For some reason, this doesn't seem like quite the reassurance gays were looking for.
