Cheat Sheet - Why Obama Can’t Solve Inequality

Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

January 28, 2014
EMPTY RHETORIC

Why does Obama conflate income inequality with mobility? Because it allows him to preach populism while doing nothing, writes Nick Gillespie. Don't expect Obama to talk seriously about reining in tax breaks or reforming entitlements that benefit the wealthy even as he says they must pay "a bit more." In fact, don't expect anything new from tonight's speech.

TWO-FACED

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is sounding more like the Taliban in his public statements and recycling their propaganda in his criticisms of the U.S., writes Bill Roggio, but he'll never make peace with the terrorist group. No matter how much Karzai attempts to ingratiate himself with the Taliban, he would be first on the chopping block if they take over.

TOO FAR

A vicious mob execution of a three-year-old toddler, shot at point-blank range alongside his grandfather in an apparent retaliation for an unpaid debt, has outraged Italy. Even for a country that often turns a blind eye to organized crime hits, this went too far, reports Barbie Latza Nadeau.

HISTORIC

In a stunning move that could change the nature of college athletics, football players at Northwestern University filed a petition to unionize Tuesday morning. The players are seeking collective bargaining rights with the National Labor Relations Board. Ramogia Huma, president of the National College Players Association, submitted paperwork including signed union cards to the NLRB. Huma said he was approached by Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter last spring, asking for help to give players representation. If approved by the NLRB, the College Athletes Players Association would not receive union dues from players.

CALLING IT QUITS

It's been another tumultuous day for the Ukrainian government. Just hours after Prime Minister Mykola Azarov submitted his resignation, President Viktor Yanukovych announced that the entire Cabinet will also resign. Other significant changes are also underway, as violent protests seem to be giving way to political resolutions. During a special session, the national parliament voted overwhelming to repeal anti-protest laws and may provide amnesty for the more than 200 protestors who have been arrested since November.
