Cheat Sheet - U.S. Lets Taliban Ally Keep Its Loot

February 07, 2014
CATCH-22

Despite blacklisting the Haqqani Network 17 months ago, not a single dollar associated with the group has been blocked or frozen by the U.S., reports Eli Lake. The reason? Washington believes it needs to appease the Haqqanis to keep the Taliban at the negotiations.

SUCH A TEASE

After dangling a statement of principles for immigration reform last week, House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that it is unlikely to pass in 2014. "The American people, including many of my members, don't trust that the reform that we're talking about will be implemented as it was intended to be," Boehner said, in reference to GOP criticisms of the president's use of executive orders. In the days since Boehner first mentioned the possibility for reform, Tea Partiers have shifted their focus from spending to "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. One House Republican said the push by Boehner should cost him his gavel.

LEGENDS OF THE FALL

In his final episode at the helm of the Tonight Show, longtime host Jay Leno got uncharacteristically misty. Stars including Oprah, Billy Crystal, Carol Burnett, and, yes, Kim Kardashian came to send him off. Tom Shales writes that no one will really miss Leno though as Jimmy Fallon gets ready to make the show his own.

THE BLUES

While Philip Seymour Hoffman's family and friends gather for his funeral, Robert Vineberg, 57, sits in Rikers Island after police raided his apartment and found drugs he allegedly sold to the Oscar winner. Michael Daly reports that the arrest caps a rapid downfall for Vineberg, who jammed with David Bowie, Blondie, and Wyclef Jean.

PETULANT

Apparently unaware of something called the Olympic spirit, Russia has escalated tensions with the U.S. as one Kremlin official accused Washington of "crudely interfering" in Ukraine. Meanwhile the Obama administration believes Russia was behind leaking an intercepted private conversation between two American diplomats in which one said: "fuck the E.U." As violence has escalated in Ukraine, American officials have tried to broker a settlement, something Russians (who still view Ukraine as their satellite state) are now trying to disrupt.
