Cheat Sheet - Storm Troopers and Gun Nuts Rule CPAC

March 07, 2014
PARTY TIME

CPAC, the granddaddy of conservative conference extravaganzas, has taken things to a whole new level, mixing virtual rifle ranges, tug-o-war, and Storm Troopers with the usual characters like Donald Trump and Wayne LaPierre. Despite all the fun, Michelle Cottle says a sense of internal party discord hung over the festivities.

STRANGER THAN FICTION

"Sensitive to criticism," "fearful of attention," and "egocentric and narcissistic." That's the profile that emerges from 63 therapy sessions with the world's most notorious drug lord, El Chapo, during his time at the Puente Grande prison in 1995. Michael Daly finds amazing similarities between the recently captured kingpin's sessions, and the fictional conversations between Tony Soprano and Dr. Melfi.

STUBBORN

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is saying "no way" to recognizing Israel as a Jewish state in comments issued Friday by the official WAFA news agency. He also said he would not accept only a portion of east Jerusalem for the capital of Palestine. Abbas said he was standing up to pressure from the U.S., as he did when seeking UN recognition for Palestine as a state. Secretary of State John Kerry has recently been pursuing a restart of negotiations between the two sides in the long and bitter dispute. He has set a deadline of April 29 for a framework.

BRRR

Thank you, weather gods. After a brutal winter, warmer temperatures are finally coming to the United States. An El Niño watch was issued Thursday, with one expected to hit by this summer. Its arrival means fewer Atlantic hurricanes and a milder winter for the north next year. But it also augurs a hot year coming up. El Niños arrive every few years, shaking up the global climate patterns.

TOUCHY

In response to the anonymous posting of recordings that allege corruption and other illicit actions, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is threatening to ban Facebook and YouTube in Turkey. The newest recording, which, like all the recordings, Erdogan says have been "fabricated," claims to catch him telling a newspaper owner to fire certain journalists. "We are determined on this subject. We will not leave this nation at the mercy of YouTube and Facebook," declared Erdogan in an interview. Apparently geeks in hoodies are that scary.
